A WORD FROM DR. QUATELA AND
DR. KOENIG
We would like to welcome you to our first practice e-newsletter.
Since 1992, the Quatela Center
for Plastic Surgery has taken pride in providing our patients
with the latest information regarding advances in surgical and non-surgical
cosmetic procedures. We spend many hours each week reading medical
journals and attending medical meetings all over the world to learn what is
new, how to achieve the best results and how to enhance patient safety. This
newsletter will give us a chance to communicate what we do now and what
the future promises in cosmetic surgery.
We feel strongly that in order
to
receive the maximal benefit from any type of aesthetic procedure, we must pay
attention to the general health and lifestyle of our patients. Keys to a
healthy lifestyle include regular exercise, a diet based on minimally processed
foods, control of unhealthy habits and reduction of stress. There is so
much information in the media about diets and exercise that it is often
difficult to decide what is fact and what is just hype. This
newsletter will try to present information regarding these issues in a
scientific and well thought out manner with the goal of making our patients
happier and healthier.
We certainly hope that you enjoy this
newletter as much as we enjoyed preparing it for you. If you have any
feedback or suggestions for future newsletters, please forward them to
landreacchi@quatela.com. We will do everything in our power to accomodate
your needs.
Best Regards,
Vito C. Quatela, M.D. and William J.
Koenig,
M.D.

ABOUT OUR
DOCTORS
Dr. Quatela and Dr.
Koenig both began their
careers as cosmetic and reconstructive surgeons. Both have extensive
experience reconstructing patients struck by the ravages of trauma, cancer or
birth defects. The reconstructive parts of both doctors practices
does go on but the vast majority of the surgery and treatments done at
the Lindsay House by Drs. Quatela and Koenig are cosmetic in nature.
Both surgeons realized that to
provide the best care for their cosmetic surgery patients they needed to spend
full time honing their skills, staff and surroundings to meet the needs of
their cosmetic surgery patients. Medicine has
advanced exponentially in the last 15-20 years and it is difficult to be an
expert in everything.
Dr. Quatela is board
certified by the American
Board of Otolaryngology and the American Board of Facial Plastic Surgery, which
required 7 years of training after medical school. Dr. Koenig is
certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Plastic
Surgery, which required 8 years of training after medical school. The
scope of practice that these certifications allow is huge but both surgeons use
their experience to concentrate on delivering the finest cosmetic surgery
possible.

WHY
COSMETIC SURGERY?
The short answer is the
patients. We treat the best people in the world.
Patients who come to the Lindsay House are optimists - they are confident in
themselves and willing to take the time and effort needed to improve their
lives. They take a proactive approach in making themselves happier by
improving something that truly bothers them. Of the millions of people in
the world who think about, talk about and wonder about having cosmetic surgery,
we get to see the best of them all, the ones who actually decide to take the
next step and come in for a consultation. Deciding to have cosmetic surgery is
not easy. All patients who choose to undergo a procedure have doubts,
feelings of guilt and questions in their mind about whether they are doing the
"right thing." These thoughts are all normal and
expected. At the Lindsay House, we strive to help our patients through this
time and do our absolute best to prepare patients both physically and
emotionally for the procedure and the recovery. We pride ourselves in
making the experience as pain free and easy as possible with the least down
time and fastest recovery.
THE
BENEFITS
There is no doubt that patients
benefit mentally and emotionally from
plastic surgery. Studies are just beginning to be published to support
these observations. A recent study demonstrated that 98% of patients said
cosmetic surgery has markedly improved their self-esteem. In this same
study, the number of patients taking anti depressant medication decreased 31%
after cosmetic surgery. Another study from the Mayo Clinic stated that patients who undergo cosmetic
surgery live an
average of 9 years longer than a matched group of non-plastic surgery
patients. Quality of life assessments show improved
scores after numerous plastic surgery operations like breast reduction, tummy
tuck and face lift. Cosmetic surgery has even been shown to improve the
sex lives of patients.

DID YOU
KNOW?
Get the Facts on BOTOX©
Cosmetic:
1. BOTOX©
Cosmetic is NOT a poison. It's actually a purified protein and a finished
medical prescription product.
2. When
BOTOX© Cosmetic is administered by an experienced physician, you should
be able to show expression. That's why it's important to choose the right
doctor.
3. BOTOX©
Cosmetic is NOT new. In fact, BOTOX© (botulinum toxin type A) has been
used therapeutically for over 16 years to treat a variety of medical
conditions. The same formulation with dosing specific to moderate to
severe frown lines in people ages 18-65 was approved by the FDA in 2002 as
BOTOX© Cosmetic.

MINDLESS EATING: WHY WE EAT
MORE THAN
WE THINK
Have you ever thought that the size of
your
utensils, bowls, plates and food packages are to blame for those extra pounds
that you just can't seem to shed? Brian Wansink, MD, director of the
Cornell University Food and Brand Lab, seems to think that these and other environmental influences may be
a major reason for
people overeating. And he has the studies to prove it.
In his recently released book entitled
"Mindless Eating: Why We Eat More Than We Think," Wansink dissects
the very psychology that goes behind eating and illustrates his points with
interesting studies suggesting that people are indeed influenced by
environmental factors. These can range anywhere from the size of your
serving dish to the name of the entrée you order at a restaurant. Wansink
demonstrates that the mind is the most
powerful tool when it comes to making eating decisions, and if we maintain a
certain level of awareness, we can use it to our advantage.
Wansink offers a number of painless
ways to
drop the pounds by curbing a few minor eating behaviors. Here are a few
tips we found that will help you lose those extra inches without leaving you
with an empty stomach:
- Beware of any foods
touting a
reduction
of calories, fat and carbohydrates. Our minds tend to associate any
reduced calorie foods with a "safe food," and in turn, we end up
eating more than we would have had we chosen the regular version.
- Use smaller
dishes. We are
often
victims of portion distortion when we use oversized bowls, plates and
cups. If you use a small plate, you will have the illusion of a
larger amount of food while maintaining a petite portion.
- Out of sight, out of
mind. Keep
meats and starches in the kitchen and only bring vegetables and salads to
the table. Research has shown that individuals will graze on food
that is closest in proximity and most convenient to them.

GET SKINNY BY REDUCING YOUR
"MINDLESS MARGIN"
Simple fact: You
can lose between 10 to 20 pounds over the
course
of a year if you reduce your daily intake by 100 to 200 calories.
One way to do this is to reduce your serving by 20% of your normal portion
size, which likely means that you will eat four to five bites less than
usual. By making this small behavioral change, you will cut your
"mindless margin" and feel just as full as you would if you had the
extra food.

SILICONE GEL FILLED BREAST
IMPLANTS APPROVED BY FDA
The Food and Drug Administration lifted a 14 years ban on the use of silicone gel breast
implants in the United States on November 17, 2006 after a rigorous scientific review concluded that these devices are safe and
effective.
"Prior to November 17, if a woman in the United States chose to have a breast augmentation her
only option was to have a saline filled implant- now American women and their plastic surgeons can choose either saline filler or silicone
gel filled
implants," states Dr. William J. Koenig.
"Saline implants are great devices but it was frustrating not to be able to use silicone gel
implants in certain patients who would clearly benefit from them. Science had conclusively shown that these devices were safe
but politics,
emotion and powerful special interest groups kept them off the market until now- this is a great victory for women in America. American women
can now make informed choices about their health care with regard to implants-- a choice that women in 60 countries all over the world have long
had," stated Koenig.
